Augustus Sheldon Hoffpauir

A beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend passed away peacefully at the age of 87, on April 16, 2026, at Landmark Nursing Center. Sheldon was born on July 20, 1938, in Indian Bayou to James and Fadra Hoffpauir, one of 12 children. Graduating from Indian Bayou High School in 1956, he went on to serve three years in the U.S. Army with his twin brother Weldon. He worked as a pipeline welder for Columbian Gulf Transmission for 30 years. After retiring, he continued to weld for local farmers and the city of Rayne for several years, while also crawfishing his own ponds until the age of 83, pulling an aluminum boat. Sheldon enjoyed having coffee and donuts with friends at Gautreaux’s Donut Kitchen, lunch at Frog City or Gabe’s, and his “very important” afternoon meetings for beer, bragging, and lots of “BSing” among friends at bars such Frog City and American Legion in Rayne, which was his home away from home. He loved his family, friends, community, and animals, especially dogs, cats, birds, and racoons. Sheldon enjoyed riding motorcycles, four-wheelers, and tractors, and was a collector of antiques, caps and knives. He truly mastered barbequing and loved showing off his skills for family reunions and at community gatherings. Sheldon belonged to a very large family and was preceded in death by his parents James and Fadra Hoffpauir; his brothers, Elwood, Ufford, Macon, Richard, and Huey Hoffpauir; his sisters Nell Savoy and Almeda LeDoux; and his only son Walter “Slade” Hoffpauir. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Sylvia Hoffpauir; his daughter Pamela Hoffpauir; his stepchildren, Chad (Danette) Duhon, Tracy Davenport, Rhonda Evans (Joe Luna), Sheila (Edward) Elliott and Frank Guillory, Jr.; his brothers E.C. (Falice) and Weldon (Dean) Hoffpauir; sister Margie Walsh; his grandchildren, Micheal Hoffpauir, Brittany (Jesse) Anderson, Danielle Valle, Tyler (Scott Fever) Davenport, Drake (Melanie) Duhon, Justin Evans, Trent (Callie) Elliott, and Chance Elliott; his great grandchildren, Samuel, Slade and Silas Anderson; Chloe and Sophia Duhon; Christopher Elliott; and Trinity Luna; as well as his pets, cat Billy and his dog Smokey. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Honored to be pallbearers are Adam Hoffpauir, Micheal Hoffpauir, Drake Duhon, Justin Evans, Trent Elliott, and Chance Elliott. Special thanks to the staff at Landmark Nursing Center and Lamm Hospice for the care they provided for Sheldon in his final weeks and to Nora Peyton who assisted with his caregiving and became a dear family friend, during his final 6 months. Visitation will be on Sunday, April 19th, from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Gossen Funeral Home in Rayne, LA; and on Monday April 20th, from 8:00 AM to 11:00 at Indian Bayou Community Church. Funeral service will be at 11:00 AM, on April 20th, at Indian Bayou Community Church, with Reverend John Locascio officiating.
